Venice
For centuries, Venice has been a source of inspiration for poets and artists which is why it is called the most romantic city of Italy. It is a fairytale city, with ancient buildings reflecting in the waters of the Grand Canal. In the winter, there is a silvery mist hanging over the water early in the morning and it is when the sunlight strikes across the lagoon, that the city is the most romantic. Places worth visiting include the Doge’s Palace, the historic centre of power in the city, where all important decisions were taken and where in 1500 counsellors would meet in the beautiful main hall. The large Piazza San Marco, is the only square in the city officially called Piazza, the others are called Campo. The Dorsoduro is the nicest city district and here you will find the Peggy Guggenheim Museum of Contemporary Art. The city centre and the surrounding islands are easily explored by boat, the vaporetto, that sails through the whole of the city.
For the overnights it’s possible to choose from two monasteries: one simple but centrally located in the district of Dorsoduro, the other luxurious and in complete tranquillity on the island of San Clemente.
The Canossiano monastery is located in the charming Dorsoduro district in the historic city centre. It dates from 1486, but was completely restored in 1998 and since then it also offers accommodation to paying guests. The monastery is built around two large courtyards and is run by nuns. The rooms are basic but clean and have a bathroom with shower/toilet. There is no restaurant, but in the immediate surroundings are nice cafeterias and restaurants. Canossiano is not a hotel for everyone, but a special address for those looking for something different.
From € 125 per room per night.
The monastery hotel of San Clemente dates from 1131 and is located on the private island of San Clemente, overlooking the water. This luxurious five star resort is an oasis of tranquillity where the charm and atmosphere of the past are maintained. There is a beautiful wooden boat that sails hotel guests regularly in 10 minutes to the San Marco Square. The gourmet restaurant Ca’dei Frati offers panoramic views of the lagoon and al fresco dining is possible weather permitting. The hotel has a lovely swimming pool (only in summer), a great spa and tennis court.
From € 250 per room per night.
KLM flies 3 times a day from Amsterdam to Venice and it is even possible to travel by boat from the airport to the city centre.
