Strolling through Lisbon

This beautiful Portuguese capital lies at the wide mouth of the Tagus River. Lisbon is a city of melancholy, but it is also a bustling metropolis full of interesting sights, museums and historic buildings. Bairro Alto, Lapa and Chiado are the exotic names of lovely neighbourhoods. It is here that the Portuguese come during the evenings to eat a delicious fish dish or sip a glass of Vinho Verde. Many of the neighbourhoods can be explored on foot, but there is also the nostalgic “tram electrico”. The Alfama district recalls the time when the Moors were in charge here and the strategically located Castelo de Sao Jorge offers a beautiful view of Lisbon. A combination of city and beach makes Lisbon irresistible but be sure to also consider a day trip out of town, for example to Cascais, a former fishing village which has beautiful beaches.

A charming place to stay is the York House, housed in a former seventeenth century convent. This historic four-star hotel dates from 1880 and is nestled between the Lapa and the Tagus districts just 2 km from the city centre. The hotel has given shelter to many famous writers over the years, including Marguerite Duras, Graham Greene and John Le Carré. There are a total of 32 rooms spread over 2 floors, all equipped with air conditioning, TV and 24 hour room.
