The green north

In the north of Portugal, it is possible to sleep undisturbed among the vineyards in combination with unique design, gastronomy, sports activities and spa treatments. Oporto is the perfect base for a cruise on the Douro River, arguably one of the world’s finest vineyards and nature reserves as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Oporto (known by the Portuguese as Porto) there are two outstanding hotels, The Yeatman Hotel which has a terrace with a swimming pool and panoramic views and the centrally situated Pestana Vintage Hotel, built in three beautifully restored 16th, 17th and 18th century buildings.

The Six Senses Douro Valley is one of the most well known places to stay in the north of the country. The former 19e century country estate has been transformed into a unique spa hotel with a 5-star service. It combines the charm and tranquillity of a historic building with modern design. Next to hotel rooms, there are also family houses that live up to the highest standards of comfort and service. The spa facilities are excellent as well as the lovely heated outdoor pool. Oporto is 100 km and the Douro River is at your doorstep.

A little further inland there are some unique country house hotels with swimming pools and exciting activities:
Casa da Cisterna: Ana and António (two biologists) made their dream come true in the traditional village of Castelo Rodrigo. Hospitality of the highest level.
Casa da Insua *****: a charming 18th-century country house with one of the finest gardens in the country and interesting activities in and around the garden.
Casas do Coro *****: thirteen authentic comfortable cottages (2 to 11 persons) with a pool in the middle of a historic village on top of a hill.
